Just back from a very successful and enjoyable weekend at the Callander Highland Games.
It was a busy weekend, with glorious weather on both days - and a chance to introduce several hundred Games-goers to the wonders of Fablet.
It was also nice to get reacquainted with a few familiar faces from last year's Games (last year's was our first big professional outing, so Callander holds a special place in the Fablet family's collective heart).
We took along a variety of flavours of our fabulous Scottish butter tablet, including Classic Vanilla, Gratuitous Violets, Irish Cream and Maple Mambo, and were delighted with the feedback from those who stopped to try our never-ending stream of free samples.
Many, many kind words were directed our way over the weekend - who wouldn't like to be told 'I don't normally like tablet, but this is fantastic!' or 'this is the best tablet I've ever tasted!'?
All in all, a great weekend.
To everyone who came tried some tablet, bought a bag or two or just stopped for a chat, thanks very much!

As of about 10 minutes ago, everything is all set for this weekend's big event: Callander Highland Games!
We'll be in the craft tent for this fantastic event, which takes place this Saturday and Sunday, July 26 and 27.
Last year, Fablet's first outing at the Games, was a huge success - we sold out well before closing time on Sunday. So this year, to make sure no fan of fine Scottish butter tablet goes away disappointed, we've upped production a few notches.
The kitchen table was a tablet lover's dream tonight as bag after bag after bag was filled, sealed and labeled, ready to take along to Ben Ledi Park on Saturday morning.
It's been a busy few days, but it'll be worth it.
Callander Highland Games is one of our favourite events. Whether you're there for just one of the days or the whole weekend, there's a huge number of things to see and do.
Funfair rides, crafts, food, a dog show, police dog display, Highland dancing and, of course, all manner of implausibly muscled men and women throwing, hauling, tossing and otherwise manhandling many times their own bodyweight in felled timber.
The event is open from midday until 5pm both days, and the craft tent - which is where you'll find both Fablet and our lovely chums from the Longcroft Soap Company - is always full of fabulous things to see and buy from some of Scotland's leading craftsmen and women.
Of course, Fablet will have a wide range of favourite flavours to try and to buy, with plenty of free samples of our delicious Scottish sweets on offer throughout the weekend.
Classic Vanilla, Buttermint, Amaretto and Irish Cream are just a few of the goodies we've packed away for you this year, so come along and say hello!

You get what you pay for

Fablet isn't cheap.
There, I've said it. It's out in the open at last.
Actually, it's no secret. Our famously fabulous Scottish butter tablet may cost a little more than some other brands out there, but there's a very good reason for that.
It's because it's better.
That's not just big-headedness or idle boasting. Our sweets are better because we don't take short-cuts. We don't use cut-price (and therefore low-quality) ingredients, and we don't leave it to machines to turn out vast quantities of confectionary.
These things make a difference. Buy some low-price tablet and take a look at the ingredients. Glucose syrup? What's that doing in there? Vanillin? Why use a cheap flavouring when real vanilla tastes better? Salt? Doesn't good salted butter give enough of a kick to the flavour?
The reason companies use these things, in just about every case, is cost. Using cheap, lower quality ingredients means they can churn out vast quanities of low-cost sweets. Cheap to produce, cheap to sell.
Which is fine, if you just want a quick hit of something sweet. But Fablet was born because I wanted more. I love tablet, and have done ever since I watched my gran make huge bubbling batches of the stuff.
I want every bite of tablet to taste like it was made with love and with the very best ingredients - not like it was thrown off a conveyor belt to stuff into the mouth of your average not-very-demanding five-year-old.
Sweets are a luxury. They won't save the world or cure diseases. When done right, though, they're a hit of pure joy. Good sweets make the world better. Bad sweets make you wish you hadn't bothered.
I discovered that, to my cost, this week. On holiday in the far, far north of Scotland, I stopped off at a newsagent for a paper and spied some little bags of tablet on the shelf. Partly to check out the competition and partly to satisfy my sweet tooth, I bought one.
One bite told me all I needed to know. It was salty, with an unpleasantly slimy, fondant-ish texture and a lingering aftertaste of fake vanilla.
It's the familiar 'almost-tablet' taste you get when a confectionery company has cut corners instead of following traditional recipes. A quick look at the ingredients told me all I needed to know - all the usual suspects were there, from glucose syrup to vanillin and extra salt.
Maybe I'm spoiled, but I prefer my tablet to taste like tablet, not almost like tablet. That's why I use organic Scottish butter, to give it a rich, smooth taste. That's why I use Madagascan vanilla instead of cheaper, but much less tasty, alternatives like vanillin. That's why I make Fablet in small batches, to make sure every single bag is as good as it can be.
Pay 99p for a bag of tablet and you'll more than likely get precisely what you pay for - something sweet, but without much flavour or texture.
Buy Fablet and you're getting a whole lot more than that. It's about quality, not compromise. It's about the flavour - and making sure you get exactly what you pay for.

Summer break

It's summer time, so Fablet is taking a brief but hopefully well-earned rest. We will be unable to ship any orders received between July 12 and July 19.
The good news, though, is that we'll be in the craft tent at the Callander Highland Games on Saturday and Sunday, July 26 and 27. This will be our third year at the games, which is always a fantastic weekend out for all the family.

It's market time again

This Saturday, June 14, is Farmers' Market day in Stirling - and Fablet will be there.
Stirling Farmers' Market takes place at Maxwell Place, a short walk from Stirling Railway Station and the Thistles shopping centre, from 9am until 2pm.
I've been busy stocking up on a few goodies to take along. Classic Vanilla's always a big hit, so I'll be packing plenty of that. This time around, I'll also have some White Chocolate and Macadamia - another oflavour that's always popular - as well as Irish Cream and more.
Irish Cream's a big family favourite here in the Fablet household, so if you haven't tried it yet, come along to Maxwell Place for a free sample - I'm sure you'll be impressed.
I'll also be selling one of my own personal favourites, and a previous Flavour of the Month ... Malted Milk. This one is absolutely stunning. If you like our Classic Vanilla Scottish butter tablet, you'll adore this one. There's a rich warmth to the flavour that's just out of this world - I'll be packing extra samples, because I know it's going to go down well.
As usual, Fablet will be sharing a stall with that notorious soap alchemist, Elizabeth of the Longcroft Soap Company (universally hailed as one of Scotland's finest soap crafters), and the market offers a great chance to pick up a wide range of foods and goods from across Scotland - everything from quality meat to baked goods, Italian deli treats, Fair Trade sweets and a whole lot more.

Always well attended and packed with stallholders from across Scotland, it's a great chance to pick up top-quality produce ranging from meats and deli produce to baked goods and Fair Trade items.
You'll be able to pick up some of our best-selling Scottish butter tablet flavours, including Classic Vanilla, White Chocolate and Macadamia and - celebrating our recent run of fine weather - Strawberries and Cream.
Fablet will be sharing a stall with the lovely Beth, business brain, creative powerhouse and chief alchemist of the Longcroft Soap Company, who will have a variety of the finest hand-made soaps and cosmetics on offer.

It's always gratifying to get a little feedback from satisfied customers - even more so when they're very, very satisfied customers!
Making tablet can be a tricky business, so it's always nice to know others are getting as much pleasure from the final product as Fablet's usual taste-testers.
At Stirling Farmers' Market recently, one customer commented: 'I'm not supposed to say it's better than my mum's, but ... it's better than my mum's!'
High praise, indeed.

The pondering is finally over. Fablet has a new Flavour of the Month.
After much deliberation, I decided it was time to dive straight back into childhood with a fruity blast of fun in the shape of Dolly Mixtures.
British readers won't need any introduction to these yummy little items, but for the benefit of our overseas chums - and those whose parents wouldn't let them near such brightly-coloured confectionery - here's what Wikipedia has to say about Dolly Mixtures:
"a Scottish confection produced for many years by different companies. The mixtures contain a variety of fondant shapes, such as cubes and cylinders in many colour combinations with subtle flavourings. The mixtures also include hard-coated fondants in "round edged cube" shapes and sugar coated jellies"
What Wikipedia singularly fails to note is that,
a) They're entirely delicious and utterly addictive, and
b) It's a flavour that works particularly well in tablet.
I pondered for a while over this one, as the previous blog entry noted. Was this flavour too silly? Too juvenile? Too fruity?
In the end, common sense prevailed and all such notions went out the window. It's too nothing, except too good to keep to myself.

Choices, choices

I'm running late.
This is not, in itself, unusual. Lateness and me, we go hand in hand, like vegetable protein bacon-flavour streaky strips and eggs. Like car ownership and massive expense. You get the picture.
This time, though, I'm late for a reason. I'm supposed to be unveiling this month's flavour of the month, but I just can't settle on one.
And why? Because I have too much choice! I love tablet. I love flavoured tablet. I love experimenting with flavoured tablet to find the yummiest, scrummiest, most irresistible flavour combinations.
So that's what I've been doing, only I've come up with so many delicious things I can't quite decided which one should be March's Flavour of the Month. Because if I choose one, you all have to wait at least another month for another glorious taste experience which might be just as fabulous.
It's a huge responsibility, but I shall try to bear it with dignity.
I'll also go off, fiddle around in the kitchen a bit more and make a decision.

There IS a cure for the wintertime blues

I've just updated the Fablet.co.uk website to reveal February's very timely Flavour of the Month.
It's a flavour I've been scoffing merrily for a while now, waiting for the right time to bring it to public notice.
With nothing all around but rain, snow, sleet, dark nights and cold, cold, cold, now seemed the perfect moment.
It's Malted Milk, and it's beyond fantastic. If snuggling under a cosy duvet with a good book while the wind whistles safely from the other side of double glazing had a flavour, this would be it. It's warm, comforting, yummy and just plain fab.
One of the pleasures of making sweets is coming up with something as good as this. First, you get to enjoy it. Then you get the pleasure of knowing other people will, too. This is one of those universal flavours everyone will love - especially at this time of year.

New pan, new things

I have a new pan. I'm not sure if it's normal to be quite this pleased with something as simple as a new pan, but it's just about the world's finest piece of cookware.
For one thing, it was a gift - a well-chosen, well-timed gift. For another thing, it's large, holds lots of tablet and, better than just about all of the above, it practically cleans itself. Anyone who's ever tried to scrub a pot caked in tablet - which can assume the consistency and temperament of quick-set concrete in next to no time - will know what a blessing an easy-clean pan can be.
It's speeded up the process in so many ways, and given me more time to try smaller batches of test flavours (I always try to think a few Flavours of the Month ahead, just to make sure everything's been well taste-tested).
So today's been spent filling orders and trying out some new things. One of the things I've been trying out has already identified itself as February's Flavour of the Month and might well be my very favourite Flavour of the Month so far.
Really, it's fantastic. Delicious. Addictive.
What is it? Well, that would be telling. All will be revealed in just a few days, but trust me - you're going to love this one.

Sticky buns + butter tablet = yay!

It's been a busy start to 2008.
A new year means 12 new Fablet Flavours of the Month, for one thing - 12 entirely new, different and totally scrumptious flavours of home-made Scottish butter tablet to imagine, create, test and perfect.
That means a lot of taste testing of sweet, tasty gorgeous things. It's a tough job, but someone's got to do it. Luckily, that someone happens to be me.
So far, the first few months of the year have been decided. I won't reveal then all here, because that would take away the fun.
January's flavour, though, is one I'm very, very pleased with, and I'm pretty certain no one out there will ever have tasted tablet quite like it before.
As you might've guessed from the title of the blog entry, I've tried combining the flavours of two of my favourite things - and the results speak for themselves.
Take the cinnamon-y warmth of a fine sticky bun and the smooth, mellow blend of vanilla, butter and fair trade sugar that goes into every batch of Fablet, and you get our Stickey Buns Fablet. It's up there with the best of our ever-growing range of outstanding Scottish sweets and, as usual, it's hand-made with love.

Christmas Eve, and I've been hard at work - this time, mixing up some special tablet to give as family gifts.
Christmas is all about family, and I have to say I'm truly grateful to mine for all the help and encouragement they've given me this year, along with some fearless taste-testing of Fablet's increasingly fabulous home-made Scottish tablet.
I've mixed up some batches of Vanilla along with some White Chocolate and Macadamia, individually labelled for each family member. Vanilla tablet is universally loved, and White Chocolate and Macadamia has proved one of our biggest hits this year - and the two flavours work really well together.
The packages look lovely and the tablet itself tastes so nice I'm surprised I managed to leave enough to pack...
Anyway, hope Santa's brought you all plenty of lovely things, and that you and yours are all safe, well and happy.

'Tis the season...

Well, December's here already, and I've been cooking up a few new treats for this most festive of months.
First up is our new Flavour of the Month - Eggnog! This classic winter warmer comes with notes of cinnamon and nutmeg, along with rich vanilla and just a dash of rum flavour. It's yummy, inescapably festive and available for one month only.
The other new kid on the block is Gratuitous Violets. Violet-flavoured tablet? Sounds like an odd mix, I know, but it works. It really, really works. This stuff goes beyond delicious and into the realms of the almost-magical.
I love it. It's aromatic, floral, sweet and very, very distinctive. It may not be to everyone's taste, but for those daring souls who don't mind trying something a bit different it could be a revelation.

New flavours

It's been pretty quiet on the blog front since the BBC Good Food Show Scotland.
That doesn't mean I've been idle, though. Oh no. Quite the reverse, in fact.
I've gone into restock-mode, thanks to that recent sell-out success, while also carrying out a bit of what might be called either research and development or, probably more accurately, 'messing about in the kitchen'.
The result of these labours is that a few new flavours are ready to roll into our roster. I'll be revealing two of them in the very near future, with others to come in future months. All are guaranteed to make our celebrated Scottish butter tablet even tastier than ever.
Fancy a few hints?
Well, one will be our flavour of the month for December and is carefully themed to suit the month's festivities. No, it's not turkey flavour. Or Brussels Sprout.
The other flavour is something I happen to think is more than a teensy bit special. It's strongly reminiscent of a little sugary sweet I loved as a kid, and I think I'm pretty safe in saying you won't ever have found this flavour combined with tablet before.
First person to guess both before I reveal them here wins a free bag of each...

To everyone who came along to see us at the BBC Good Food Show Scotland this weekend, a huge and heartfelt thank you!
We had a superb time at Glasgow's SECC and it was an absolute delight to meet so many people with so many nice things to say about our hand-made Scottish tablet. It doesn't hurt, of course, that sales exceeded expectations - in fact, we were completely sold out by the end of the event's final day.
The Good Food Show was a huge event, with a dizzying array of things to see, try and taste, so it means a great deal that so many of you took the time to visit us at our stall alongside the Longcroft Soap Company.
It was a real pleasure to get to share some of our fabulous flavours with so many fine people. In fact, it's not overstating things to say that this three-day event gave us some of the most enthusiastic responses to our range so far. For that, thank you to all of you. It was a real pleasure to meet you, and we hope to hear from you again soon.

Gordon Ramsay: Rock Star!

A busy first day at the BBC Good Food Show Scotland.
Due to other commitments, I was only able to be there for a few hours on Friday, so the lovely Amy manned Fablet's stall, shared with Beth of the Longcroft Soap Company.
Even in those few hours, though, I managed to meet and talk to a lot of people, all of whom were very complimentary about our hand-made tablet range. There were quite a few visitors who'd never even tasted Scottish butter tablet before, so it was nice to introduce them to one of the world's great taste experiences.
The event itself - running at the Glasgow SECC until this Sunday, November 4 - is fantastic, and well worth a visit. There are stalls and displays stretching as far as the eye can see, with literally hundreds of tasty treats to sample, as well as cookware, kitchen and household goods and loads more.
There are also guest spots from top TV chefs Nick Nairn, James Martin and Gordon Ramsay. Now, I didn't get to see Mr Ramsay myself, since I was busy handing out free samples of tablet, but, from the roar of the crowd as soon as he appeared, you might be forgiven for thinking the Led Zeppelin reunion had started early. For foodies, Ramsay has achieved rock star status. The crowd absolutely loved him.
Beth was ready with a bar of soap to wash out his infamously filthy mouth, but it seems the obscenity-prone chef was on his best behaviour.
We're just getting ready to head out for another day at the SECC, and looking forward to it enormously. Come along and say hi - there might be some free Fablet in it for you!

Tablet factory

The kitchen's been turned into a Fablet factory as we get ready for the BBC Good Food Show Scotland, taking place next Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 2, 3 and 4.
I've been trying to make batch after batch of scrummy butter tablet to keep up with what I hope will be a busy day at Glasgow's SECC.
I started out with several batches of White Chocolate & Macadamia, then moved on to Irish Cream. Today's been a Vanilla day, and tomorrow I'll turn my hand to Amaretto.
With a good supply of the key flavours in stock, I can then turn my hand to a few new things, some old favourites and maybe even some extra batches - just in case things turn out to be busier than I expect. Be prepared, as I'm sure I'd've been taught if I'd ever been a Boy Scout.
Meanwhile, the kitchen's pretty much occupied by me, many pots, many trays and lots of ingredients.
With several pots on the go at the same time, and various trays of tablet cooling on the table, it's all become a bit of a juggling act - stirring one batch, pouring another, packing yet another, then back to preparing another for the stove.
At some point, I'm going to have to stop so people can use the kitchen for other things - like making food. But not yet - there's another batch to be done...

Fablet at the BBC Good Food Show

The big news this week is that we'll be selling our fabulous hand-made gourmet tablet at the BBC's Good Food Show Scotland in Glasgow at the start of November.
Taking place at the SECC, the event will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 2, 3 and 4. It's a foodie's paradise - and not just because of our scrumptious Scottish butter tablet.
Celebrity chefs Gordon Ramsay, Nick Nairn and James Martin will be there, creating mouth-watering dishes live on stage, and there will also be cooking demonstrations, handy tips for healthy eating, a 50s-style milk bar, whisky tasting and a whole lot more.
Hundreds of exhibitors will be there, so there should be plenty to dazzle your tastebuds - even after you've tried a few of our irresistible free samples.
You'll find Fablet, alongside the Longcroft Soap Company, in the farmers' market section of the event, specially set up to offer a platform for local produce. We'll have all our best-loved flavours - and maybe even a few surprises - so please come along. It looks like being a great day out.

Masala Chai Tablet

I resisted.
'No,' I said. 'It'll never work and, even if it does, no one will like it. People don't want tablet that tastes like tea.'
I can be very dense sometimes. People love tea. People love tablet.
Luckily, my favourite and most trusted taste-tester persisted.
'Make chai-flavoured tablet,' she said. 'Go on. Make it.'
A week went by.
'Are you going to make that chai tablet, then?'
Another few weeks passed.
'Have you made it yet?'
Finally, I gave in. I made the chai tablet, and it was good. It was better than good. It was great.
Never let it be said I don't know when to admit I was wrong. This is one of those experiments that really defies expectation.
You have the tried-and-tested Fablet Scottish butter tablet recipe as a base, topped off with notes of cardamom, cinnamon and tea. It's a fresh, warm but zesty mix of flavours and it works.
It's so good I've added it to the range as this month's Flavour of the Month - and with its entirely unexpected mix of flavours and ingredients, I think you'll appreciate the resolve it took not to simply call it Teablet.

Christmas starts here

All right, it may seem a tad early for festivities, but after a fabulous day at Balfron today, I'm full of festive cheer.
First, and most importantly, today's Pre-Christmas Cracker at the McLintock Hall was an excellent fundraiser for the Friends of Strathcarron Hospice, with pitch fees from the many stallholders and entry fees from even more visitors going to this most worthy charity.
On top of that, Fablet's head chef, salesman, marketing manager and bag-packager (ie me) met lots of extremely nice people, all of whom had very nice things to say about the sweets on offer.
White Chocolate &d Macadamia was an early leader in both sales and taste tests (free samples were, of course, available all day), but Classic Vanilla and Irish Cream soon caught up.
I was particularly pleased to see our Chilli Chocolate and Strawberries & Cream going down so well. I think both of these flavours are more than a bit special, so it was good to see so many faces switch from mild suspicion to delight as soon as those samples popped into their mouths.
It was a busy day, and I was on my feet for pretty much all of it, but it was well worth it.

Christmas Cracker

Is it that time of year already?
Leave Scrooge at home this weekend and head for Balfron, Stirlingshire, where the sleigh bells are ringing and Christmas is most definitely in the air.
We'll be helping the Friends of Strathcarron Hospice set the ball rolling for the festive season at a Pre-Christmas Cracker Craft Fair this Saturday, October 6.
You'll find us at Balfron's McLintock Hall from 10am to 3pm, along with a wide variety of stalls to help you stock up on goodies for Christmas ... or just to give yourself an early-October treat.
We'll have a variety of favourite flavours, including Irish Cream, Amaretto, White Chocolate & Macadamia, and Vanilla.
Come along and see us, and help support the Friends of Strathcarron Hospice, a very deserving charity. Proceeds from entry to the event go towards the hospice.
